fundamental hope

Job 17-19

We must never forget our eternal destiny in Christ - residence with Him forever!  I pray that the Lord will grow the longing of my heart to see Him and be made entirely pure - spirit, soul, and body:

19:25 I know that my Redeemer lives,
and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.

26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
       yet in my flesh I will see God;

27 I myself will see him
with my own eyes—I, and not another.
How my heart yearns within me!

Heavenly Father, please purify the desires of my mind, heart, and will to desire you only.  Lord, please intensify my longing for you and the realization of your eternal Kingdom.  Lord Jesus, I am your servant.  May it be to me according to your Word.  I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, my Living Redeemer.  Amen.

perception versus reality

Job 14-16

Job felt betrayed, but he really wasn't. As I was reading Job's expression of perceived injustice, I realized how Job's words really apply to Jesus better than Job. Jesus was really betrayed. Jesus was truly beaten "unjustly". He was innocent and pure, yet it was the holiness and justice of God, coupled with the love of God that brought Jesus to suffer and die for the sins of humanity.

16:9 God hates me and angrily tears me apart.
He snaps his teeth at me
and pierces me with his eyes.
10 People jeer and laugh at me.
They slap my cheek in contempt.
A mob gathers against me.
11 God has handed me over to sinners.
He has tossed me into the hands of the wicked.
12
"I was living quietly until he shattered me.
He took me by the neck and broke me in pieces.
Then he set me up as his target,
13 and now his archers surround me.
His arrows pierce me without mercy.
The ground is wet with my blood.
14 Again and again he smashes against me,
charging at me like a warrior.

Oh, how He loves us! As a result of Christ's suffering, I can now join with Job in saying:

16:19 Even now my witness is in heaven.
My advocate is there on high.
20 My friends scorn me,
but I pour out my tears to God.
21 I need someone to mediate between God and me,
as a person mediates between friends.
22 For soon I must go down that road
from which I will never return.

Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus, who suffered your wrath for my sin, and who turned right around and pleads my case to you on the basis of His suffering. Lord, your love is overwhelming! Your grace is amazing. Thank you for your mercy and kindness. May I be faithful to tell others of your kindness and share your wonderful love. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, my Advocate. Amen.

arbitration

Job 11-13

Note: if something bad happens to a friend of yours, don't tell them that it happened because they sinned.  Not only is it bad theology, it just makes your friend hurt worse.

But I love these words in chapter 9:

32 "He is not a man like me that I might answer him,
that we might confront each other in court.

33 If only there were someone to arbitrate between us,
to lay his hand upon us both,

34 someone to remove God's rod from me,
so that his terror would frighten me no more.

35 Then I would speak up without fear of him,
but as it now stands with me, I cannot.

Heavenly Father, you are righteous and holy, and there is nothing I can do to earn your kindness or mercy.  It is only by the blood of Jesus Christ, God and Man, that I can be removed of guilt and your righteous wrath.  Thank you, Jesus, for bringing me into fellowship with the God of the universe, and that I can speak to Him as a son speaks to his father because He is my Heavenly Father.  I love you, Lord, and I want to know you and love you better.  I pray in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

trash or treasure

Job 3-4

Yesterday in Chicago, on my way back from the McCormick center to O'Hare, a very outspoken homeless man approached me and another guy from the conference that I was walking with.  He was using a fake British accent and medieval-style quotations (such as "m' lady" and "m' lord"), so I don't remember now what he said exactly, but it was something about "helping him in the name of Jesus" or something like that.  Even then, I still tried to weasel out of helping him by telling him that I didn't have any cash (which I didn't), but he suggested that I could buy him some food (which I could afford to do because (1) the Lord has blessed me and my wife with good jobs, and (2) my flight wasn't scheduled to depart for another four hours).  So, I awkwardly said goodbye to the gentleman that I was walking with and told him that I was going to help this guy out.

He led me around the corner and guided me to an alley to take the "shortcut" to get to the nearest grocery store.  As he paused to relieve himself on the back corner of a building, I was thinking, "What have I gotten myself into."  When we resumed our walk to the grocery store, I told him, "I am going to ask you an honest question, because I think you can handle it.  I am curious, what is the greatest impediment to escaping homelessness?"  Immediately, his demeanor changed.  He dropped the fake accent, and he dropped the "look how bad I've had it, please pity me", song and dance that he had been giving me, and I could tell that he was being honest with me.  He basically told me that he thought it was easier for an immigrant to come from another country and succeed in the States than it was for a homeless person to work their way out of homelessness because of the stigma that our society places on homelessness.  He basically said that the regular loneliness, rejection, and abuse that is common to homelessness is what makes so many of them go crazy.

As we were waiting in queue inside the grocery story, I tried to steer the conversation to a spiritual discussion.  "I have heard you mention the Lord a couple of times ..."  He interrupted me as he said something about Jesus and pulled a small Gideon New Testament out of his fanny pack.  The cover was worn, but the pages looked straight and white.  So, I challenged him, "That's great that you have a copy of the Scriptures, but do you read it?"  He said something else which I couldn't quite understand, but it seemed like he was caught off guard just a bit.  I pressed further.  "What does it mean to follow the Lord."  His response astonished me.  "To suffer.  But to love as you suffer."  Wow.  I don't know how you could understand that but not know the Lord.  He continued, "He suffered way more than me; my suffering is small compared to His.  So, I just love people the way that He did."

After I bought him a fried chicken wing and a fried chicken breast (his choice), he perked up with bright eyes and asked me, "Will you buy me a subway pass?"  "Sure.", I told him.  Holding the seven-day pass that I bought him, he told me with sincere gratitude in his eyes and voice, "This will give me a place to stay."  The previous night, he had slept in the park in the rain.

Job 1:20Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

Heavenly Father, please help me see people and the world through your eyes.  Please give me your vision for my life, and teach me to follow Christ my Lord.  Father, thank you for taking care of me, but please forgive me for thinking that financial stability is equivalent to your grace.  Grace is so much more than a job to work or money to spend.  May the true treasure of my heart be Jesus Christ, and may your love flow through me.  I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who suffered and proved His love for me.  Amen.

encouraging hymn

A Brother shared this hymn with me this afternoon, and it is so encouraging to me as I feel overwhelmed right now with all of these academic responsibilities:
  1. He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase,
To added affliction He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.
His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men,
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
He giveth and giveth and giveth again.
  1. When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half-done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
Our Father's full giving is only begun.

spiritual Jujutsu

Esther 6-8

What Haman intended as evil for Mordecai and the Jews, God turned around and humbled Haman before Mordecai.  What Satan has meant for evil, God can turn around and use for His glory and the exaltation of Christ.  We need not worry or be anxious over the enemy's plans (be aware and beware, yes), we only need to focus on the power of our God and His sovereign control.

This was the "verse of the day" yesterday on biblegateway:

Psalm 91:1
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Heavenly Father, I love you, and I trust you with my life.  Lord, I pray that I will seek you first today, and I know that you will let me find you if I seek you with all of my heart.  May your name be praised, and may I experience you shelter and rest.  I pray in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

aloof

Esther 3-5

The Lord is mysteriously in control.  It often seems like we can't see Him, but He is near, and He is in control.  The Lord is constantly using us by His grace and our faith to accomplish His will.  Mordecai was a man of integrity, and He trusted that the Lord would protect the Jews.  He was also pragmatic, challenging Esther to be a vessel of God's deliverance.

The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy.  Every person on earth has been separated from God by sin.  But by faith in Christ, we can be restored to enjoying a close relationship with our Heavenly Father, and we can be used by Christ and the Holy Spirit to lead others to find peace with God and enjoy Him forever.

Heavenly Father, I praise you because you are always in control.  Lord, please grow my faith, and use me to help others experience your grace and mercy.  I pray in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.
