Kaleidoscope- valiant bride

Proverbs 31:10 TPT
Who could ever find a wife like this one— she is a woman of strength and mighty valor! She's full of wealth and wisdom. The price paid for her was greater than many jewels.

The Hebrew word for "strength and mighty valor" is חַיִל (pronounced khah'-yil) and is typically associated with a powerful army or elite warrior.

John 19:30‭, ‬34 TPT
When he had sipped the sour wine, he said, "It is finished, my bride!" Then he bowed his head and surrendered his spirit to God. ... But one of the soldiers took a spear and pierced Jesus' side, and blood and water gushed out.

The Hebrew words for "to finish/complete" (Strong's H3615, כָּלָה, kaw-law'), "completion/finished" (Strong's H3617, כָּלָה, kaw-law') and "bride" (Strong's H3618, כַּלָּה, kal-law') are homonyms, and etomologically, the Hebrew word for "bride" comes from Strong's H3634 (כָּלַל, kaw-lal'), which means, "to complete, perfect, make complete, make perfect".  Jesus's blood/death was the dowry (bride-price, as red as rubies but infinitely more valuable) and completed/fulfilled/accomplished the old covenant of law.  Then, blood and water flowed with the issuing of the new covenant of grace.

Revelation 19:6‭-‬8 TPT
... Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns! Let us rejoice and exalt him and give him glory, because the wedding celebration of the Lamb has come. And his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, shining bright and clear, has been given to her to wear, and the fine linen represents the righteous deeds of his holy believers."

There seems to be a mysterious combination of grace and freewill regarding the giving and receiving of the fine linen.  Mysteriously, He has prepared these good deeds in advance (Eph. 2:10), but the Bride makes herself ready by partnering with Holy Spirit in the completion of the righteous deeds.

Father, thank you for fulfilling the old covenant.  Jesus, thank you for making us your valiant bride of grace.  Holy Spirit, may I walk in 100-fold measure of righteousness, to the glory of Yahweh.  I love you.

Yellow leaves this fall

I have been so captivated by the beauty of the trees that have turned golden-yellow this fall.

Somehow, they resonate with my soul.  Perhaps it is a passion for His glory.

Father, you are such an amazing artist! You are glorious, and you make gloriously beautiful handiwork.  I want to radiate glory like these trees.  Holy Spirit, please help me.  I love you.

Metallic behavior

Praise Yahweh, all you servants of Yahweh who minister by night in the house of Yahweh. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise Yahweh. May Yahweh bless you from Zion, he who is the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalms 134:1‭-‬3 NIV

In our family discussion Sunday morning, we were talking about how Jesus is especially present when two or three are gathered in His name (ekklesia).

When I read Psalm 134 on Monday, it occurred to me that perhaps when we gather together in His name, it is like the overlapping electron valence and conduction bands in a metal material: Holy Spirit flows very easily among/through us.

Perhaps, as we mature in faith, individually, we grow from a semiconductor behavior (i.e., it takes more intentionality for us to allow Holy Spirit to flow through us) to a semimetal and eventually to a fully metallic state (i.e., Holy Spirit flows easily through us all day and every day).

Gathering together catalyzes that maturity process, incrementally shifting each of us towards greater freedom, as well as inducing a metastable superconductor state (i.e., Holy Spirit resonates among us) while we are in unity together.

Father, thank you for your loving work in transforming us into the likeness of your Son. Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence. Please help me have greater conductivity today. I love you.

I want to be fertile soil

I have recently been struggling with feeling like a failure.

I have wanted to help people around the world with access to safe drinking water and the Living Water, but I feel like I have very little to show for my efforts or purported intention.

I feel like most of my life is entangled in the cares of this world, being busy like running on a treadmill, much like the third soil type in Jesus's parable of the sower and the soils, wasting time, energy, and resources on things that don't produce eternal fruit.  I want to be fertile soil - 30, 60, or 100 fold - but I don't feel like I know how to break into that domain.

Father, please help me.  Set me free from worrying about the things of this world.  Jesus, I want to follow your model of walking in the Spirit.  Holy Spirit, please show me the way.  I want to love you.

Love and worship

As a being with a body, soul, and spirit, I want to be driven by my spiritual desires (i.e., in harmony with the Holy Spirit), not by bio-physical or psychological/emotional/intellectual/professional desires.

I think that my greatest spiritual desire is to love and worship Yahweh.  You can love someone without worshipping them, and you can worship something without loving it, but in our relationship with Yahweh, one without the other is incomplete.

Honestly, I often let my soul desires drive me. I regularly overcomit my time/effort, and I think it is because I care too much what other people think of me. I think the main reason is that I don't want to let people down.  I don't want to be a failure.  I want to be perfect by keeping everyone happy with me.

But I need to start saying "no" to a lot more opportunities so that I can focus on joining my Father in His work.  I have been distracted by so many things, none of them inherently evil, but pulling me away from joining my Father.

John 5:17‭, ‬19‭-‬20 NIV
In his defense Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working." ... Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.

Father, I love you, and I want to work with you.  Please give me wisdom to see what I need to let go of and what I need to say "no" to so that I will have time to join you fully in the work you have for me. And the work you have for me is not too much, so you will make sure that I have enough time to rest, as well.  I need more rest. I love you.

First versus Third reality

Praise Yahweh! Through faith in Jesus, our true identity in the Third Heaven is sons and daughters of God!

John 1:12‭-‬13 NIV
Yet to all who did receive [Jesus], to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

In the Third Heaven, which is greater than the Second and First Heavens, we are royalty because we are sons and daughters of God!

Psalms 113:4‭-‬8 NIV
Yahweh is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens. Who is like Yahweh our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people.

So, if I am aware of my eternal royal identity in the Third Heaven, then I don't need to try to impress anyone in the First Heaven (i.e., here on earth).

Proverbs 25:6‭-‬7 NIV
Do not exalt yourself in the king's presence, and do not claim a place among his great men; it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here," than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.

Father, thank you for making us sons and daughters! You are a good Father! Thank you for making us royalty!  We stand in authority and power with you.  Jesus, I want to be secure in my identity and humble in every situation, just like you.  Holy Spirit, thank you for helping me be more aware of my identity.  I love you!

Jesus is Yahweh and Messiah

In Psalm 110, King David prayed to Yahweh and Messiah; King David saw the revelation that Messiah is in Yahweh, and Messiah is High Priest and High King.

Psalms 110:1‭-‬7 TPT
Yahweh said to my Lord, the Messiah: "Sit with me as enthroned ruler while I subdue your every enemy. They will bow low before you as I make them a footstool for your feet." Messiah, I know God himself will establish your kingdom as you reign in Zion-glory. For he says to you, "Rule in the midst of your enemies!" Your people will be your love offerings. In the day of your mighty power you will be exalted, and in the brightness of your holy ones you will shine as an army arising from the womb of the dawn, anointed with the dew of your youth! Yahweh has taken a solemn oath and will never back away from it, saying, "You are a priest for eternity, my King of righteousness!" The Lord stands in full authority to shatter to pieces the kings who stand against you on the day he displays his terrible wrath. He will judge every rebellious nation, filling their battlefield with corpses, and will shatter the strongholds of ruling powers. Yet he himself will drink from his inheritance as from a flowing brook; refreshed by love he will stand victorious!

After the religious leaders and experts of the law tried to trap Jesus with arguments, Jesus quoted Psalm 110 to show that Messiah is both God and man:

Luke 20:41‭-‬44 TPT
Jesus then posed this question to the people: "How can the experts of the law say that Christ the Messiah is David's son? Haven't you read in the Psalms where David himself wrote: The Lord Jehovah said to my Lord, 'Sit near me in the place of authority until I subdue all your enemies under Your feet!' " Jesus explained, "If David calls this one 'my Lord,' how can he merely be his son?"

On the walk to Emmaus after Jesus was resurrected from death, Jesus explained that Messiah was the perfect sacrifice, revealed in the Scriptures:

Luke 24:25‭-‬27 TPT
Jesus said to them, "Why are you so thick-headed? Why do you find it so hard to believe every word the prophets have spoken? Wasn't it necessary for Christ, the Messiah, to experience all these sufferings and then afterward to enter into his glory?" Then he carefully unveiled to them the revelation of himself throughout the Scripture. He started from the beginning and explained the writings of Moses and all the prophets, showing how they wrote of him and revealed the truth about himself.

Father, your way of rescuing us from sin and death is amazing!  Jesus, you are Messiah and Yahweh, High Priest and High King, and the perfect sacrifice to redeem all humans to close fellowship with Father.  Holy Spirit, you are so humble and gentle, and you point everyone to Jesus and Father.  Yahweh Trinity, I love you.

My sins are washed away

Reading in Luke 23 about Jesus being crucified, I was reminded of 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, which is a direct contrast to what King David prayed in Pasalm 109:  Jesus was innocent, and I was guilty; but Jesus was punished so that I am clean and incorporated into His righteousness.  This blessing is multigenerational; my children are now blessed instead of cursed.

Father, thank you for your mercy.  Jesus, thank you for your faithfulness to endure such intense pain and agony in your body and soul because of your great love.  Holy Spirit, please help me grow as an ambassador of reconciliation.  I love you.

Salvation Singularity

The sacrifice of animals could not accomplish our salvation:

Hebrews 10:1‭-‬4 TPT
The old system of living under the law presented us with only a faint shadow, a crude outline of the reality of the wonderful blessings to come. Even with its steady stream of sacrifices offered year after year, there still was nothing that could make our hearts perfect before God. For if animal sacrifices could once and for all eliminate sin, they would have ceased to be offered and the worshipers would have clean consciences. Instead, once was not enough so by the repetitive sacrifices year after year, the worshipers were continually reminded of their sins, with their hearts still impure. For what power does the blood of bulls and goats have to remove sin's guilt?

And if humans sacrificed humans, that would be demonic:

Psalms 106:35‭-‬39 TPT
But they mingled themselves with their enemies and learned to copy their works of darkness. They began to serve their gods and bow before their idols. All of this led them away from you and brought about their downfall. They even sacrificed their little children to the demon spirits, shedding the innocent blood of their sons and daughters. These dark practices greatly defiled the land and their own souls, through the murder and bloodshed of their own babies! Their sins made them spiritual adulterers before you.

But God sacrificed his own son to pay the penalty of our sin and cleanse us from our crimson stains:

Hebrews 10:5‭-‬7‭, ‬10‭-‬14 TPT
So when Jesus the Messiah came into the world he said, "Since your ultimate desire was not another animal sacrifice, you have clothed me with a body that I might offer myself instead! Multiple burnt offerings and sin-offerings cannot satisfy your justice. So I said to you, 'God— I will be the One to go and do your will, to fulfill all that is written of me in your Word!' "
...
By God's will we have been purified and made holy once and for all through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus, the Messiah! Yet every day priests still serve, ritually offering the same sacrifices again and again—sacrifices that can never take away sin's guilt. But when this Priest had offered the one supreme sacrifice for sin for all time he sat down on a throne at the right hand of God, waiting until all his whispering enemies are subdued and turn into his footstool. And by his one perfect sacrifice he made us perfectly holy and complete for all time!

Heavenly Father, thank you for making Jesus both the Great High Priest and the only perfect and innocent human sacrifice.  Jesus, you are the singularity, and I love you.

Desire for orthopathy

I grew up in a church culture with a strong focus on orthodoxy (correct doctrine/beliefs) and orthopraxy (right practice/behavior).  A few years ago, Randy preached about orthopathy (correct feelings), which was a very helpful introduction to the concept.

As I read the three parables about the lost sheep, lost coin, and lost son, I think Jesus is sharing key insights into the heart of the Father, especially the high value of His children and how He feels when they are lost.

I want to embrace the heart of the Father, but I generally consider myself quite immature with respect to my capacity to feel and my emotional intelligence/awareness.

Father, your heart is so good.  I want to be like you.  I want to have a heart like yours.  Jesus, thank you for living a lifestyle that expresses the heart of the Father.  Holy Spirit, please mold my heart to match the Father's heart.  I love you.

Teach us to number our days

Psalms 90:3‭, ‬5‭-‬6‭, ‬10‭, ‬12‭, ‬16‭-‬17 TPT
3 When you speak the words "Life, return to me!" man turns back to dust. ... 5‭-‬6 One day we will each be swept away into the sleep of death. We glide along through the tides of time— so quickly gone, like a dream that fades at dawn. Like glistening grass that springs up one day and is dry and withered the next, ready to be cut down! ... 10 You've limited our life span to a mere seventy years, yet some you give grace to live still longer. But even the best of years are marred by tears and toils, and in the end with nothing more than a gravestone in a graveyard! We're gone so quickly, so swiftly; we pass away and simply disappear. ... 12 Help us to remember that our days are numbered, and help us to interpret our lives correctly. Set your wisdom deeply in our hearts so that we may accept your correction. ...
16 Let us see your miracles again, and let the rising generation see the glorious wonders you're famous for. 17 O Lord our God, let your sweet beauty rest upon us and give us favor. Come work with us, and then our works will endure, and give us success in all we do.

I recently celebrated my 40th birthday.  I want to live with a sense of purpose every day, aware that time is limited.

I was reminded of the parable in which each servant received the same amount.  We don't all spend the same amount of time on the earth, but everyone lives in the present.  A life well-lived is the integral of making the most of the present.

Father, thank you for the present.  Help me abide with you in the present.  Jesus, thank you for showing me what it looks like to abide with the Father.  Spirit, thank you for your friendship and love.  Starting from this birthday, please help me mature in prophecy and casting out demons.  I want to look more like Jesus.  I love you.

Fruit of the Spirit

Colossians 4:12‭-‬13‭, ‬18 TPT
12‭-‬13 Epaphras, who is also from Colossae, sends his loving greetings. I can tell you that he is a true servant of Christ, who always labors and intercedes for you. His prayers are filled with requests to God that you would grow and mature, standing complete and perfect in the beauty of God's plan for your lives. Epaphras has such great zeal and passion for you and for those who are from Laodicea and from Hierapolis. ...18 Now finally, I, Paul, write this with my own handwriting, and I send my loving greetings to you! Remember me in my imprisonment. May the blessings of God's grace overwhelm you! Love in Christ, Paul

Growing in the fruit of the Spirit, and the mindset and lifestyle of Jesus, is so much more valuable than anything we could gain in this world.

Father, please help me grow.  Jesus, thank you for your loving example. Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence and power.  I love you.

Living generously

I started this post before Father's Day, so I was thinking about how my parents taught me to be generous with time and money.

2 Corinthians 9:6‭-‬12 TPT
6 Here's my point. A stingy sower will reap a meager harvest, but the one who sows from a generous spirit will reap an abundant harvest. 7 Let giving flow from your heart, not from a sense of religious duty. Let it spring up freely from the joy of giving—all because God loves hilarious generosity! 8 Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do. 9 Just as the Scriptures say about the one who trusts in him: Because he has sown extravagantly and given to the poor, his kindness and generous deeds will never be forgotten. 10 This generous God who supplies abundant seed for the farmer, which becomes bread for our meals, is even more extravagant toward you. First he supplies every need, plus more. Then he multiplies the seed as you sow it, so that the harvest of your generosity will grow. 11 You will be abundantly enriched in every way as you give generously on every occasion, for when we take your gifts to those in need, it causes many to give thanks to God. 12 The priestly ministry you are providing through your offering not only supplies what is lacking for God's people, it inspires an outpouring of praises and thanksgiving to God himself.

This morning, I remembered that I had drafted this post and wanted to complete it, and then this verse was in my reading this morning!

Luke 6:38 TPT
Give generously and generous gifts will be given back to you, shaken down to make room for more. Abundant gifts will pour out upon you with such an overflowing measure that it will run over the top! Your measurement of generosity becomes the measurement of your return.

I am so thankful for what my parents have taught me. I remember a conversation with my dad when I told him that I wanted to give more than a tithe, and he told me that God would bless me for my generous heart.  I am thankful for Jesus's promise that you can't out-give God.  And I am thankful for my dad speaking this truth over me.

Father, you are so generous!  You send rain to the righteous and the unrighteous!  You love to give good gifts to your children!  Jesus, thank you for your example of generosity, even giving your own life.  Holy Spirit, thank you for empowering me and leading me to be generous. Thank you for parents who taught me these principles from childhood. I love you!

Imitating our Father

Luke 4:40‭-‬41,43 TPT
40 At sunset, the people brought all those who were sick to Jesus to be healed. Jesus laid his hands on them one by one, and they were all healed of different ailments and sicknesses. 41 Demons also came out of many of them. The demons knew that Jesus was the Anointed One, so they shouted while coming out, "You are the Messiah, the Son of El Shaddai!" But Jesus rebuked them and commanded them to be silent. ... 43 But Jesus said, "Don't you know there are other places I must go to and offer them the hope found in God's kingdom realm? This is what I have been sent to do."

Ephesians 5:1-2 TPT
1 Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as his beloved sons and daughters. 2 And continue to walk surrendered to the extravagant love of Christ, for he surrendered his life as a sacrifice for us. His great love for us was pleasing to God, like an aroma of adoration—a sweet healing fragrance.

Jesus showed us what it looks like to imitate our Father.

I want to be bold in imitating my Father.

Father, your creativity is amazing! And I love your heart to heal.  Jesus, thank you for showing us how to live like Father.  Holy Spirit, thank you for being with us and giving us your power.  Please help me be more bold in opportunities to show your love and power.  I love you.

Living and parenting free-Spirited

Luke 1:68‭, ‬73‭-‬75‭, ‬78‭-‬79 TPT
68 "Praise be to the exalted Lord God of Israel, for he has seen us through eyes of grace, and he comes as our Hero-God to set us free! ... 73‭-‬75 He has rescued us from the power of our enemies! This fulfills the sacred oath he made with our father Abraham. Now we can boldly worship God with holy lives, living in purity as priests in his presence every day! ... 78 The splendor light of heaven's glorious sunrise is about to break upon us in holy visitation, all because the merciful heart of our God is so very tender. 79 The word from heaven will come to us with dazzling light to shine upon those who live in darkness, near death's dark shadow. And he will illuminate the path that leads to the way of peace."

Galatians 4:7 TPT
Now we're no longer living like slaves under the law, but we enjoy being God's very own sons and daughters! And because we're his, we can access everything our Father has—for we are heirs of God through Jesus, the Messiah!

I have heard some sermons on how bad Hell will be, and I have heard a few sermons about Heaven, but generally, I think we don't talk enough about the incredible goodness of the Lord.

As John the Baptizer was raised in a Spirit-folled home, so I want to parent from a Spirit-filled framework (not a religious framework).

Father, thank you for your incredible mercy and grace! Jesus, thank you for illuminating our lives and setting us free from slavery to law, sin, and religion.  Holy Spirit, help me live as a free son.  I love you.

I am a son of Abraham

Galatians 3:6‭-‬9‭, ‬14‭, ‬29 TPT
6 Abraham, our father of faith, led the way as our pioneering example. He believed God and the substance of his faith released God's righteousness to him. 7 So those who are the true children of Abraham will have the same faith as their father! 8 God's plan all along was to bring this message of salvation to the nations through the revelation of faith. Long ago God prophesied over Abraham, as the Holy Scriptures say: "Through your example of faith all the nations will be blessed!" 9 And so the blessing of Abraham's faith is now our blessing too! ... 14 Jesus, our Messiah, was cursed in our place and in so doing, dissolved the curse from our lives, so that all the blessings of Abraham can be poured out upon even non-Jewish believers. And now God gives us the promise of the wonderful Holy Spirit who lives within us when we believe in him. ... 29 And since you've been united to Jesus the Messiah, you are now Abraham's "child" and inherit all the promises of the kingdom realm!

I am a descendent of Abraham through faith, not through biology or religious law.  Abraham believed God's promise, not the law.  The law was given to Moses 4.3 centuries later.  Abraham was blessed because of God's promise, not because of the law.  Like Abraham, I believe God's promise, and I will share in God's promised blessings for Abraham (v. 9, 14, 29).

The presence of Holy Spirit today for those who believe is the richest part of the blessings (v. 14).  How incredible!  God doesn't wait until after we die to share His Presence with us!  He gives Himself generously, and Holy Spirit guides us to step into the fullness of the promised blessings.

Father, thank you for sending Holy Spirit! Thank you for sharing your presence!  You are so generous!  You are a good Father, and you love to give good gifts to your children! What gift could possibly be better than your very Presence: Holy Spirit residing in our spirits?  Jesus, thank you for becoming a curse to remove the curse from us so that we could live to walk in the Father's promises and blessings! Holy Spirit, please help me keep in step with you. I love you.

Give thanks to the Lord

Psalms 118:1 NIV
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

I saw my wife crying because she was discouraged by the current housing market in two ways: first, that it seemed like there were already half a dozen offers on any house she inquired, and second, the offers were all way over asking price.

So, I asked the Lord to bless us with a house for a good deal, in spire of the current market frenzy.

The next day, Brandi got a call from a lady saying that she would allow us to purchase her house significantly below her original asking price.

We went to look at the house that Saturday, and on Sunday, as we were praying for some visiting missionaries, I felt the Lord ask me if I believed it was an answer to prayer.  I felt awkward because the house is much nicer than what we were looking for.

I think the Lord is trying to teach me that He is a good Father, and He loves to give good gifts to His children.

Many times when I see the sunset, I think of it as God's fingerprints, His craftsmanship. But what if, with an open heart, I can actually peer at a sunset and see His face?

Father, thank you for your extravagant generosity.  You are good and your love endures forever, regardless of whether or not you bless us with an amazing house. But I sure am glad to see several of my wife's childhood dreams fulfilled in this house. I love you.

Sanctification

I had a good conversation with Andres yesterday about entering God's rest and the connection to three aspects of salvation (justification, sanctification, and glorification), based on Hebrew 3-4.

This morning, I read this verse, and it reminded me of the importance of us devoting ourselves to the Lord in His process of sanctification:

2 Corinthians 7:1 TPT
Beloved ones, with promises like these, and because of our deepest respect and worship of God, we must remove everything from our lives that contaminates body and spirit, and continue to complete the development of holiness within us.

Father, I want to turn my affection toward you.  I want to be like you, as Jesus modeled for us.  Holy Spirit, lead me on further, higher, and deeper.  I love you.

in honor of my Grandmother

My Grandmother went to be with the Lord about two weeks ago.  She was my last living grandparent, now with my other three Living grandparents.

I thank the Lord for the heritage that I have received through Grandmother (and my other grandparents).  She was an honorable, sincere, and vigorous woman who loved the Lord.

The first time I brought Brandi to meet Grandmother and Granddaddy, as we were driving up the lane to their house, we saw Grandmother standing on top of the old Scout, chainsaw in hand, trimming branches from a mesquite tree.  She was a petite lady, but she was wiry and tenacious.

Grandmother was always a hostess, regularly offering (almost insisisting) something to eat or drink.  I think she is pleased to see that gift of hospitality in Rhett.

I remember as a child, being impressed with the style of her plates, silverware, and glasses.  And she dressed up for any outing, even hauling the trash to the dump.

When I was in highschool or college, Grandmother gave each of my brothers and me a bookmark for Christmas, and the one that she gave me said, "RELAX".  I'm still working on implementing that simple instruction, but I think she is pleased to know that I've made a bit of headway these past two years.

I feel compelled to respond with a few points of clarification to the pastor's remarks at Grandmother's funeral service. First, I do agree that the Lord knows the number of our days (Psalm 90:12), and that it is important for us to live intentionally and wisely with the finite number of days that we have.  I also agree that He lovingly and sovereignly allows trials to grow our faith and maturity.  However, I do not agree that God "balances out" good days and bad days, and I don't agree that Alzheimer's/dimensia is from Him.  God is a good father, and He loves to give good gifts to His children.

The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
Proverbs 10:22 ESV

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.  Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Matthew 7:7‭-‬11 ESV

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
James 1:17 ESV

The second is a very minor detail: while I do agree that at the end of time there will be a separation of the righteous and unrighteous (wheat and tares, sheep and goats) to Heaven and Hell, respectively, according to the teaching of Jesus, it will be the angels, not the demons, who serve as bailiffs.

Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, "Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn."' ...  The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.
Matthew 13:30‭, ‬39 ESV

Father, thank you for the good gifts that you have given me through my Grandmother.  Thank you for the hope of seeing her again in person with you.  I love you.

This verse reminds me of Peter's vision on Sunday morning of people in our church enjoying the River in various ways, specific to our personalities:

Psalms 46:4 TPT
God has a constantly flowing river whose sparkling streams bring joy and delight to his people. His river flows right through the city of God Most High, into his holy dwelling places.

Father, may we step deeper into fellowship with the Holy Spirit, enjoying Him and glorifying Him forever.  His power demonstrated through us is a byproduct of intimacy with you.  I want to know you better and be more like you.  I love you.

Praying for more power of the Holy Spirit

Our church met last night to pray for more power of the Holy Spirit.  These verses in my daily reading this morning echo/synthesize several of our prayers last night!

My heart is on fire, boiling over with passion. Bubbling up within me are these beautiful lyrics as a lovely poem to be sung for the King. Like a river bursting its banks, I'm overflowing with words, spilling out into this sacred story. ... In your glory and grandeur go forth in victory! Through your faithfulness and meekness the cause of truth and justice will stand. Awe-inspiring miracles are accomplished by your power, leaving everyone dazed and astonished!
Psalms 45:1,4 TPT

Father, may we be oil-soaked wicks on fire with the power of the Holy Spirit! May we be riverbeds through which the Holy Spirit flows powerful living water! May the signs and wonders you perform among our church be a bold poem sung in love for Christ!  We love you.

The hope of planting

Last night, I was standing outside with Brandi, enjiying the gentle cool spring breeze.  I could almost smell planting season.  Planting season is a lot of hard work, but there is an implicit hope in that work of putting seed in the ground.

Jesus was a seed, and He was planted in the ground.  He rose and made us a crop of Brothers and Sisters.  The magnitude of this reality can never be fully appreciated. The Creator King became creation to redeem us and transform us into an even greater dimension of His likeness.  Simply amazing.

Jesus has already suffered the hardest work of planting, that which was so hard that it was actually impossible for us. We are His miraculous harvest. And we are harvesters, planting seeds of His truth, power, and love.  The harvest is already ready.

Father, please send out more workers into the harvest.  Jesus, thank you for planting what we could not plant.  Thank you for making us your Brothers and Sisters.  Holy Spirit, help me keep in step with you today so that your truth, power, and love will be sown effectively.  Show me where to harvest. I love you.

Praying for more power

Our church is uniting in prayer every morning and every Friday evening between now and Pentacost to specifically ask Holy Spirit for more signs and wonders to point people to Jesus.

Father, thank you for sending Jesus to teach us about your goodness and live as an example of a man in harmony with you, empowered by Holy Spirit.  Jesus, thank you for sending Holy Spirit so that we can do even greater things than you.  Holy Spirit, lead us to walk in step with you so that our character will reveal your fruit and our prayers will reveal your goodness, love, and power.  I love you.

I'm going to stop trying to "do my best"

I've been sitting on this one for a while.  This post is somewhat of a continuation of the previous.

God has been speaking to me through my running recently.  One concept that has emerged is that my internal personality/desire to be perfect or the "best" can run away with something innocent and make it oppressive to me or others.

When someone innocently tries to encourage me to "do my best", what they mean is "you don't have to be perfect, just be you", but what I internalize is "exhaust yourself completely until there is nothing more that you could have given".

So, instead of "do your best", I am going to tell myself and my children to "in everything you do, work for the Lord, not for humans (including yourself)".  This ethic frees me to include enjoyment as a fundamental value within my work.  Thus, if I catch myself pushing myself so hard that I am beginning to restrict enjoyment, then I am coming out of alignment with the will of God to do everything for Him and no one else.

Father, thank you for your high value of joy.  Jesus, thank you for enduring the cross for the sake of the joy set before you.  Holy Spirit, thank you for growing a crop of joy in my life. God, thank you for freeing me from working as a slave to humans and inviting me to work for you.  I love you.

trying to learn to rest in the Father's acceptance

I started counseling back in November because I want to be a happier person; I don't want to be stressed out all the time.  Counseling has helped me realized that I choose to overcommit and be stressed out about it; this condition is not imposed upon me.

Why do I do this to myself?  Well, I think it has something to do with me being a perfectionist (Enneagram Type 1 poster child).  I graduated salutatorian from high school, but that summer before I started college, I was pretty sure that I was going to fail out of college and be an embarrassment to my family and hometown.  I graduated college with a 4.0, but I was still almost certain that I would fail out of graduate school that next semester, and I would be the laughing stock of my hometown.

But my greatest sense of being an imposter has been as a professor.  After a few years as an assistant professor, I went into my department chair's office and told him that I didn't think I was going to be able to get tenure; I felt like I was failing and I couldn't handle the pressure.  He explained that I was actually doing very well.  I guess I thought that I would slow down a bit after getting tenure, but I have continued to feel pressure to do more to try to keep up with the best professors in my field.  I am beginning to realize that this pressure is self-inflicted.

I am speculating that, as a perfectionist, I expect myself to be perfect, and I will not accept myself unless I am perfect.  And perhaps, under certain circumstances, "best" might be a surrogate for "perfect".  But somehow, I speculate that deep inside, I already believe that I am a failure, and I keep trying to "measure up" to try to prove myself otherwise.

In my mind, I know that this is a lie because the Father has already paid an infinite price to redeem me and make me his son.  I am already accepted, and it is not because of what I have done or what I could do but because I am his son.  But somehow, it is that classic challenge to translate that awareness in my mind to confidence in my soul.

I had a good conversation yesterday with a colleague at one of the most prestigious universities in the US, and after I explained what I've been discovering about myself, he responded very bluntly that there have been thousands of geniuses who have lived before us, and there are so many professors who work inordinate amounts of time, so we have no chance of being the best. Perfection is unattainable. That truth was actually very relieving to hear.  He went on to say that, at the same time, we should not dismiss the significance of our work as professors in environmental engineering, because we are some of the most privileged people in the world - inspiring students and trying to make the world a better place through our research.

So, the key is staying in step with the Father and the Spirit, just like Jesus.  Sure, there were some days that Jesus worked long hours, but that wasn't EVERY day, and He had a daily pattern of spending time in restful solitude with the Father.

I went for a run last Friday. I wanted to run a certain distance, but my body was very tired.  I wasn't even halfway to my goal, and I could tell that my body wasn't going to make it.  So I told myself to be strong and push through!  I felt the Lord tell me, "Wisdom is knowing the difference between perseverance and stubbornness."  But I pressed on.  I thought about Jesus taking time to know the Father's will and being confident to do it.  So, I kind of asked the Father what He thought about what I was doing (both presently in the run, and figuratively in my career).  He told me that I'm working too hard, and I need to rest.

But I kept running.  I eventually agreed on walking, but only after I got to the next intersection.  But then there was family rounding the corner, just as I was approaching, and I didn't want to look weak in front of them, so I kept running (even though I would probably never see them again in my life, and they probably didn't even notice me).  So, I kind of agreed to start walking after the next intersection.  But I kept running because I wanted to boost my stats on the elevation gain in my run by running up the next hill.  So, I eventually started walking, but so exhausted at that point that I realized that I had pushed myself way too hard.  And I have been very tired for several days since then.

I felt like my experience on the run was symbolic of my constant internal struggle with my internal critic, which has greatly impacted my education and professional career.  And I know that my family has too often got the exhausted Shane because I overinvested in my work.  Perhaps, since work has quantitative success metrics, whereas family does not, I try to maximize my performance by maximizing the quantitative metrics, which often ignores the impact on family  Yet, now, I am beginning to realizing that high-quality relationships with my wife and children are way more valuable than me perceiving myself as an excellent worker.

I still have a great opportunity to shepherd my wife and children, and I can do that well if I spend time resting in the Father's acceptance.

Father, thank you for your patience with me.  Thank you for never giving up on me.  Thank you for spending the blood of Christ to redeem me.  Thank you for sending the presence of the Holy Spirit.  Thank you for the privilege of resting in the identity that you have given me as your son; I can not earn that title, and it is both futile and silly to attempt to.  I want to know your will and walk in it, just like Jesus did.  So, I commit to you (and to my wife and children) today, that moving forward, I am going to abide in your rest instead of trying to impress myself or others with my productivity.  I know that this is where the abundant life is that Christ promised us.  I love you, and I am excited about the next phase of my journey with you.  It is going to be good.

The reality of His presence

I will invite the poor and broken, and they will come and eat until satisfied. Bring Yahweh praise and you will find him. Your hearts will overflow with life forever! From the four corners of the earth, the peoples of the world will remember and return to the Lord. Every nation will come and worship him.
Psalms 22:26‭-‬27 TPT

I think we will dine together with Him, and it will be wonderful!

And while the good is sure to be amazing, it will be His presence that satisfies our hearts.

May we continue to grow more acutely aware of his presence today.

Father, thank you for your presence.  Thank you for the privilege of being with you in the third heaven, even now.  Help me live today in awareness of the reality of me being hidden in Christ in the third heaven and in anticipation of Christ's victorious return.  I love you.

Elijah, John the Baptizer, and Jesus

Matthew 11:9‭-‬14 TPT
Or did you encounter a true prophet out in the lonely wilderness? Yes, John was a prophet like those of the past, but he is even more than that! He was the fulfillment of this Scripture: See, I am sending my prophetic messenger who will go ahead of me and prepare hearts to receive me. "For I tell you the truth, throughout history there has never been a man who surpasses John the Baptizer. Yet the least of those who now experience heaven's kingdom realm will become even greater than he. From the moment John stepped onto the scene until now, the realm of heaven's kingdom is bursting forth, and passionate people have taken hold of its power. For all the prophets and the Torah prophesied until John appeared. If you can receive this truth, John is the Elijah who was destined to come.

I am speculating that there is a reflective pattern at the beginning and end of the age of the gentiles.  Jesus said that John the Baptizer was a type of the promised return of Elijah.  Elijah left earth in somewhat of a victorious flare without dying, but perhaps he will return as one of the two witnesses near the end of time (Rev 11, between the sixth and seventh trumpet) and will be killed.  Jesus came first in humility and died, but He will return in commanding victory at the end of time.  The time between when John the Baptizer began preaching to Jesus's death and resurrection was several years, and some people suggest that the time of tribulation will last several years.

Father, you are an amazing cinematographer!  I love your foreshadowing and plot development!  I praise you because your ways are so far beyond our ways!  I love you!

Send us!

Matthew 9:35‭-‬38 NIV
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Father, thank you for sending us to El Paso.  I know that you sent us here.  We want to follow Jesus's example of teaching, proclaiming the good news, and healing every disease and sickness.  Show us the next step.  I love you.

First 3.7-day fast

The Lord gave me the strength to fast for almost four days.  I wish I would have spent more dedicated time in prayer, but it still was an incredible experience.

I ate dinner Thursday evening, and then I broke fast with dinner on Monday evening.  (I did have communion on Sunday morning, but I don't count that as breaking fast.)

I shared a few speculative thoughts with Brandi yesterday.  I think there are both temporary and permanent benefits to fasting.  In some sense, there is a heightened awareness of the spiritual reality that occurs during and after fasting, but it decays with time.  That is why it is so important to fast regularly.  But, somehow on a different dimension, there is also a cumulative effect of all of the fasting that you have done - an accumulation of the collective impacts of all of those fasts.  It changes you.

Father, thank you for the opportunity to fast.  Jesus, thank you for the example of fasting.  Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence and encouragement during fasting.  I love you.

fasting for more

I read this passage this morning in my daily reading:
Matthew 8
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

Our church is doing a 21 day fast (Jan 10-30), and Brandi and I chose to do a Daniel fast (this time we are doing vegan, sugar-free, and caffeine-free).  The first week, I thought I had COVID because the coincident sugar- and caffeine-withdrawals were fierce.  I am currently doing some fasting from food, and this morning, I watched a sermon about healing, and the pastor shared from Matthew 8 (the exact passage that I read earlier this morning) about how Jesus invites us to follow Him.  It will cost us, and it will be inconvenient and uncomfortable.  This really encouraged me to not give up in my fasting.

Later this morning, I was praying for more experiences with the Holy Spirit, to grow closer to the Father's heart, and to see revival.

I just turned on Pandora radio this afternoon, and the first three songs directly spoke to those three prayers, IN ORDER (select lyrics listed for each):
  1. More (Red Rocks Worship)
I just want more, I just want more
More of you, God, more of you, God
I just want more, I just want more
More of you, God, more of you
Pour out all I have and lay down all I am
    Making room for you
Lord, I'm ready to open up my heart
    To receive, not in part
But the fullness of who you are
    Lord, I'm ready

  2. Heartbeat (Mosaic MSC)
    Tell me all your secrets
    Tell me everything
Show me how to love you
    Show me how to live
    Wherever I go
    Whatever I lose
All I want is to be with you
I wanna know your heartbeat, heartbeat
Show me how your heart beats, heart beats
The rhythm of your love is for me
    I wanna know your
    I wanna know your
    Heartbeat

  3. Fullness (Elevation Worship)
Now the world awaits Your presence
And this power is within us
We will rise to be Your image
    Spirit come, Spirit come
Pour it out, let Your love run over
Here and now, let Your glory fill this house
Pour it out, let Your love run over
Here and now, let Your glory fill this house
Tongues of fire, testifying of the Son
One desire, Spirit come, Spirit come
Speak revival, prophesy like it is done
One desire, Spirit come, Spirit come
This really encouraged me that He hears my prayers.  He is giving me the strength to pursue Him, and He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Father, you are so good.  Holy Spirit, I want more of you.  Father, I want to know your heart.  Jesus, I want to see your revival explode through me.  I love you.

Seeking the Father's heart

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?'  Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
Matthew 7:21‭-‬23 NIV

It is the instinct of the true believer to search for and find, that which brings pleasure to the Father.
- Bill Johnson, Dreaming with God

Many times I feel like I am doing a lot of "good things", but I'm not confident that I'm doing what God wants me to do.  I need to mature so much in my relationship with the Father; I feel like an infant/toddler who can sort of stumble around but can't have a conversation with the Father.  I think I need to spend more time trying to learn how to talk with the Father.  But most of the time, I am too busy because I am generally overcommitted.

Father, please teach me to talk with you.  Jesus, please teach me how to talk with the Father.  Holy Spirit, please teach me how to talk with the Father.  I want to know your heart.  I want my heart to match your heart.  I love you.

wonderings

Proverbs 1:30‭-‬31 NIV
Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

I wonder what seeds I am planting in my ignorance of wisdom.

Matthew 5:31‭-‬32 NIV
"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

You get a pastor to perform a wedding, but you get a lawyer to perform a divorce.  I wonder what fraction of couples considering a divorce go back to the pastor instead directly to the lawyer.

Father, I want to humble myself to follow you and receive your wisdom. Holy Spirit, please lead me.  I ask in the name of Jesus, and I know that you are faithful to give wisdom to those who ask. I love you.

Simple obedience

Acts 5:12‭, ‬16‭-‬20 NIV
The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. ... Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed. Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. "Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people all about this new life."

I want to be obedient like they were.  They simply lived the zoe life, and then they had opportunity to teach it.

Father, the apostles walked with Jesus, and they followed His example of following you.  Jesus, I want to follow your example, too.  Holy Spirit, thank you for being with me; please help me follow Jesus.  I love you.

The Son is inheriting the nations

Psalms 2:6‭-‬8 NIV
"I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain."  I will proclaim Yahweh's decree: He said to me, "You are my son; today I have become your father.  Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

Acts 2:4‭-‬6 NIV
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.  Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Father, I praise you for honoring the Son and giving Him the nations.  I want to join you in your work. Holy Spirit, please fill me and anoint me, and demonstrate your signs and wonders through me. I love you.
